"Sometimes called 'gourmet' or 'premium' coffee, specialty coffees are made from exceptional beans grown only in ideal coffee-producing climates. They tend to feature distinctive flavors, which are shaped by the unique characteristics of the soil that produces them. The phrase "specialty coffee" was first used by Erna Knutsen in a 1974 issue of the Tea & Coffee Trade Journal. Knutsen, then a coffee buyer for B.C. Ireland in San Francisco, coined the term to describe beans of outstanding flavor produced by special microclimates." -Specialty Coffee Association of America ReinGold Coffee is also British Columbia Certified Organic and USDA Organic, which ensures the product adheres to established standards. More specifically: "The BC Certified Organic Program is a system of accreditation (of certification bodies) and certification (of organic enterprises) based on rules described in the Organic Agricultural Products Regulation of the Agri-Food Choice and Quality Act of BC.
The purpose of organic certification is to ensure that the agreed upon conventions of organic management systems are being practiced not only by growers, but also by all the people who handle and process organic food on its journey to the final customer. To accomplish this, PACS provides a system that combines strict production standards, verifiable third party inspections and legally binding contracts that protect the producers and buyers of organic products. Organic certification verifies that operations have implemented organic production systems that comply with established standards. Organic certification is not a final guarantee regarding absence of residual environmental contaminants."
